Ballantines 17: A Packaging Design Masterpiece

Li-Shang Printing Co., Ltd's Award-Winning Whisky Packaging Design

Ballantines 17, a limited edition packaging design by Li-Shang Printing Co., Ltd, celebrates the famous whisky's 7th win of the Scotch Blend of the Year title in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible. The design, inspired by the significance of the Bible, combines Ballantine's signature blue color with a gilded magnificent altar, creating an elevated stage for the liquor bottle and the Whisky Bible.

The unique properties of this design lie in the user's interaction with the packaging. As users unfold the packaging, the visuals, the smells, and then the tastes create a sensuous experience, emphasizing the value of the whisky. The packaging is a rigid box with UV Offset printing on silver foil paper, gold, and blue spot color with embossing technique on logos. The highlight of the packaging is the conveyor belt mechanism installed under the box, which allows the bible stand to rise up as users lay down the box cover.

The packaging's dimensions are 250 mm in width, 155 mm in depth, and 370 mm in height, with a bottle capacity of 700ml. The design tags include whisky, packaging, liquor packaging, and creative packaging. The design team included Design director Sheng-Hsun Hong, Graphic designer Chih-Chen Huang, and Packaging structural designer Li-Fan Liu.

Upon opening the plain blue box, the bible emerges on the golden stage, placed right next to the prestige Scotch Blend whisky. A pathway leading up to the stage, the gold prints record the past seven awarded years. Cork bottled samples of the spices and flavors are presented at the front of the box cover, providing users a more dynamic experience for the sense of smell right before their first sip of the whisky.

The project started in Taiwan in June 2020 and completed in Taiwan in August 2020. The design was inspired by the Bible, and the aim was to portray a sacred moment with the honorable mentioned whisky, as if it is presented at the end of a holy altar. The key was to convey the concept of time and create interactions with the senses through special structural mechanism and thoughtful placement of objects.

The design faced challenges in creating a sequence of interactions from unfolding the packaging to drinking the liquor. The design carefully considered how the users would interact with the components and how the experience of colors, movements, smells, and tastes would present the value of the brand to its full potential. This design was awarded Silver in A' Packaging Design Award in 2021, a testament to its remarkable design and innovation.
